BHS Culinary

This year we had our first ever chicken wing competition hosted by Kim Prince of Hotville Chicken and produced by Chef Stef.  The students were incredibly talented coming up with creative concepts such as "Elote Wings" and some tried and true flavors like garlic parmesan! Our esteemed guest judges included greats like Chef Sunny Sweetman, who is Oprah's Private Chef as well as the Executive Chef of Paramount Studios; Food Network's Tournament of Champions, Top Chef, and owner of Day Bird, Mei Lin; Jayne Portnoy, food and beverage consultant for Nestle, Moet Hennesy as well as other national brands; local food writer and influencer James Tir AKA @LBFoodComa, as well as members of our District Administration.  

On April 19th, students in the Culinary Arts 1 class competed in the first Candy Apple Competition.  This event stemmed from a cross-curricular lesson through Geography for Tourism, ELA 1-2 and Culinary Arts 1 where culture and identity were the main topics.  The students demonstrated their culinary skills by designing candy apples that represented their culture and gave an elevator pitch to a panel of representatives from Disneyland and Browning alumni.

Culinary Arts 1 students are putting their baking skills to the test this week!  The theme: Romeo & Juliet where they will make and design cupcakes that depict the feud between the families of the Capulets and Montagues. They must incorporate secret ingredients and present their cupcakes to the judges, where they will take into consideration the flavor of cupcake, frosting, use of the secret ingredient and presentation.  Good luck, Bison chefs!

Browning's Culinary 2 classes were treated to a Guest Chef demonstration by the one and only Dara Yu who competed in the first season of Junior Master Chef, winning runner-up: but then moving on for redemption nearly 10 years later competing and winning Fox's Master Chef.  As the students were learning about the intricacies of cooking and saucing dry pasta, Chefs Dara & Stef showed them how to make the ever-classic Olive Garden Pasta Alfredo!  Be sure to be on the lookout for more visits from Chef Dara in the future.
